The manufacturing industry was for a long time an integral part of the city. In the 19th century the “Kreuzberger Mix“ which combined living and production took place side by side was a popular model. Nowadays, in times of fast increasing property prices and limited living areas, manufacturing can hardly be justified in the inner-city context and most of productions have been relocated to the suburbs or to foreign countries outside of Europe.
In our project “Werkstadt” we ask ourselves how the “Kreuzberger Mix” would look like today.
What kind of new hybrids will arise between the two typologies of producing and living?
The new formed block combines a furniture production in the basement with different types of living in the upper floors. The big producing hall turn into the piazza of the block wich is accessible through long public passages. The cantine is connected to an old people`s home and the smaller workshops of the production are linked to artist residences.
Collage as a method: We designed the “Werkstadt” in a very intuitive way. With quick and rough collages of groundfloors, fassades and models, we tried out atmospheres and styles which we transferred to our project in a second step.
